St. Augustine is an ideal vacation destination for snowbirds. This northeast Florida nook features all the perks you will come to love about Florida, without some of the substantial and often frustrating summer and spring drawbacks.
We look at what makes St. Augustine special, why it’s so popular, and where you can find all sorts of fun things to do for your extended stay.
St. Augustine Weather
Here’s the bottom line – St. Augustine is beautiful all winter long.
Why?
Well, St. Augustine is on the northern edge of Florida so it manages to avoid many of the intense weeks of crushing heat that can accompany any Florida town- yes, even in the winter.
The smooth breeze from the neighboring waterside (the Matanzas Bay) will leave you comforted and calmed. It’s a fantastic city backdrop. Each fall and winter month offers something lovely.
St. Augustine Weather In:
October: Ask any St. Augustine local and they will tell you the facts- yes, it is still warm and cozy in October. October weather often hovers around the high 70’s and 80’s. But keep in mind, this is in stark contrast to many other Florida towns further south which easily boast consistent temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s through fall. Most Floridians know to wear something light and mask-free for Halloween!
November: November is the first month where you can feel that light bite in the air. St. Augustine may have temperatures dip to the 60’s in November.
December: December is odd. We are on the cusp of winter pretty solidly, but it is still sunny and often rather warm. It is common for the last two weeks of December to have temperatures stay within the 60’s. Even if it gets cooler, there’s still virtually no chance of snow.

Things to Do
What can you do to have a great time in St. Augustine?
Well there’s no better time to indulge in the outdoors! These things to do all cover the many outdoor possibilities of this coastal historic town.
Castillo de san Marcos: For a rich romp through history, check out the Castillo do San Marcos. As likely the oldest Spanish fort in the country, this famous landmark overlooks the river and the gorgeous Bridge of Lions. See sleeping quarters up close and watch as a dedicated group reenacts a cannon firing.
Fountain of Youth: This classic site and nature park is famous for its immortal properties. Largely regarded as the real home of Ponce de Leon’s spring of eternal hope, the park features 15 acres of gorgeous gardens, walking trails, and history. The Spanish moss pours over the grasses, making it a beautiful place to simply relax and wander.
Alligator Farm: The Alligator Farm is not just a place for kids. Anyone who likes the interesting and peculiar can have a blast watching a myriad number of alligators sunning out- and yes, even eating! There’s a special migratory bird walking trail, some rare and precious creatures, like the lemur and cassowary, and a gift shop.
Events
St. Augustine is filled with big seasonal and cultural events all year long. But the snowbirds are in for a special treat when coming during the months of October to December.
Greek Festival: The Greek festival features music, authentic food, and special gifts all around Greek culture. It usually takes place in October at Francis Field.
Lightner After Hours: The Lightner Museum hosts its yearly after hours event in the gallery, followed up by dinner. This is one of the most elegant Thanksgiving events the city offers.
Nights of Lights: The city’s most popular holiday-inspired event is almost certainly the Nights of Lights. It is about 31 days of spectacular lighting covering downtown, across buildings and high in the trees. Book one of the available St. Augustine resorts early! Many of the local businesses will chime in with seasonal deals and you can go on special Nights of Lights-focused tours through the historic district. In all, it’s a splendid and bright event for all.
