Top 5 Pubs in St. Augustine

It’s time to knock back a beer, enjoy some folksy Irish jams, and get treated just rudely enough to make it charming. Yes, it’s an Irish pub, and few coastal cities do them better than St. Augustine.

St. Augustine is a magnet for pub drinking. You really couldn’t go wrong with any of the pubs in St. Augustine, but we have detailed the top five where you feel like an authentic piece of Ireland made it to the ancient city.

Barley Republic

Location: 48 Spanish St, St. Augustine, FL 32084

The Barley Republic is the quintessential Irish pub in town. While some may contain deep American food influences or be watered down to accommodate everyone to some degree, Barley Republic lives and breathes Irish culture.

They aren’t interested in appeasing anyone, which is why they retain that cottage-style décor despite a massive redesign in 2017. They remain open to 2 a.m. every day of the week and sell a variety of Irish malts.

You will find authentic Irish pub grub favorites, such as the Shepherd’s Pie and Fish & Chips. Happy Hour is every weekday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Find $4 draft beers and half off premium cocktail pitchers. Live music is upstairs every Saturday at 9 p.m. You won’t find cookie-cutter covers of Journey and Styx here.

Ann O’Malley’s Irish Pub

Location: 23 Orange St, St. Augustine, FL 32084

Ann O’Malley’s had a makeover and a trade of hands recently, but the heart and soul of this sincere Irish pub are still firmly in place.  The restaurant is a notoriously friendly place to be. The doors are usually open and the foot traffic along Orange St. is almost always high.

You can relax inside the cozy décor or hang out on the patio. Ann O’Malley’s is a sporty place, so expect a few televisions, some enthusiastic Irish sports fans, and a handful of social events. This includes trivia nights and live music every weekend.

This classic pub is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day, with limited hours Sunday of noon to 2 a.m.

Meehan’s Irish Pub and Seafood House

Location: 20 Avenida Menendez, St. Augustine, FL 32084

Meehan’s is located right on the water in downtown St. Augustine. It’s got a location to impress, but the food holds its own. You will find a fabulous deck and a full bar overlooking the river. The restaurant is known for some high-quality burgers, corned beef and cabbage, and its signature dish, the Anastasia Island Bouillabaisse.

Not to be confused, Meehan’s is actually one restaurant room within a much larger restaurant. It’s essentially billed as three restaurants in one.

You will find The Backyard Island Café (for a tropical ambiance) and the Famous Johnny’s Fish House and Oyster Bar (for fish enthusiasts) in the nearby area. So if you want a pub and the others want some fish or Jimmy Buffet, they know where to find you.

Meehan’s is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, with extended hours to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Donovan’s Irish Pub

Location: Palencia, 7440 US-1, St Augustine, FL 32095

Take your evening out of downtown and down beachside for a few hours at Donovan’s Irish Pub. This authentic pub embraces true Irish pub traditions and was the creation of Tess, who put her family’s last name on the map with good food and brews.

Everyone is welcome to bring whatever they got, from smiles to frowns, in true Irish fashion to the wee hours of the evening. Their beer cheese soup is famous along with Guinness batter onion rings.

Prince of Wales

Location: 54 Cuna St, St. Augustine, FL 32084

Truthfully, Prince of Wales is more akin to an English pub than an Irish pub, but there are enough Irish eats and drinks for it to slide on in. If it wasn’t for the name of the eatery (and the massive British flags hanging outside the building) you might mistake the difference.

Prince of Wales is an exceptional tavern regardless of its official designation. You will find many Irish beers inside. You also get an opportunity to order the Beef and Guinness Pie, the Chicken and Mushroom Pie, and any of the many beer-battered burgers. The cozy atmosphere, offbeat charms, and authentic food make it a wonderfully appealing place to be for pub enthusiasts.

It is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. most days.
