In a town with such a rich and colorful history going back centuries, it should be no surprise that the arts and culture community is large and thriving – especially the performing arts. Featuring some of the most talented performers in all of Florida – perhaps even all of the United States – the shows available to be seen in our nation’s oldest city are so fantastic you may just sit there in your seat long after it’s over, wishing it never had to end. St. Augustine may be a small town, but it has a theater scene that rivals much larger cities — and the quality of its performances will steal your heart. Read on to learn about some of the most popular St. Augustine theaters.
1. Limelight Theatre
Offering free admission on your birthday, The Limelight Theatre plays everything, including Shakespeare, modern British comedy, and many other styles. Carol Channing would have given a standing ovation for last summer’s production of Hello, Dolly! and their Christmas performance of Miracle on 34th Street had the staff at The Ocean Gallery once again believing in the existence of Santa Claus! Nothing rounds out an evening of dining and entertainment in the Historic district better than a night at the theater, and for almost 25 years, The Limelight has provided year-round entertainment for locals and tourists alike, and we are always excited to see what they have up their sleeves next!
2. The St. Augustine Amphitheater
Not content with just being your typical music venue, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Anastasia Island is another example of wonderful Augustine theaters and offers family music classics on Friday nights during the fall and spring. Kids of all ages will love watching family movies under the stars when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold. What a great way to draw your family closer together while vacationing in our beautiful city, don’t you think?
3. Flagler College Theater Arts Department
No one is more enthusiastic about theater arts than a college student who dreams of making his way as an actor or actress, and the shows performed by our college students are spectacular! Filled with laughter and pathos, these young and talented men and women give their all as they perform everything from Shakespeare to comedy to musicals. Their next performance will be a musical held in March, with tickets costing only $15, your investment will help with their education – and thoroughly entertain you as well!
