History

Before you come out to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, you might be interested in learning a bit of its backstory. The amphitheater itself was constructed in 1965, but the reason for its construction dates back much further; the amphitheater was built in honor of the 400th anniversary of the city. The breathtaking Anastasia State Park was chosen As the location of the 16-acre amphitheater, offering plenty of space for performances for years to come.

When the amphitheater was built, a unique play was also commissioned. The city commissioned Paul Green, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, to create a play called Cross and Sword, depicting the city’s founding. This play became recognized as the official state play of Florida and ran for a whopping 32 years! The theater was renovated beginning in 2002 and now can entertain up to 4,100 patrons at a time.

FOSAA

The St. Augustine Amphitheatre wouldn’t be what it is today without FOSAA, or the Friends of St. Augustine Amphitheatre. This nonprofit organization was created in 2009 and is committed to making the facilities more accessible and bringing guests of all ages to experience the majesty of the amphitheater. Although FOSAA is a separate entity from the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, this organization supports all kinds of events here.

One of the most popular events supported by FOSAA is the Children’s Art Festival, bringing kids from all around the area to bring out their creativity and participate in the celebration. FOSAA is also instrumental in running the Music and Arts Summer Camp for local elementary school kids and Camp Rock for middle and high school students. Finally, FOSAA distributes several grants allowing other nonprofits and schools to hold events and activities at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.
