With centuries of American history wrapped into the city, you couldn’t find a more accomplished and inspiring place to celebrate Independence Day. Stay at beachfront vacation rentals on St. Augustine for a weekend, week, or the whole summer season, and enjoy the events and attractions organized for the Fourth of July.
Below are four events you should pay attention to for the big holiday this year.
Fireworks Over the Matanzas
The biggest and boldest Fourth of July event in St. Augustine is the Castillo de San Marcos Fireworks Celebration, known officially as the Fireworks Over the Matanzas. It is without a doubt, the most impressive way to fully open up the summer season. The fireworks blaze over the bay. The Castillo de San Marcos is a landmark fort dating back centuries, and its courtyard has an incredible open grass space where visitors and locals collect to see the glow of the fireworks over the water.
The fireworks are designed for style. Some will scale 2,000 feet in the air and others will float right over the fort at about 100 feet up. The 2018 celebration is expected to include just over 5,000 individual shells.
The All-Star Orchestra will play a set from 6 to 8 p.m., preceding the fireworks. Their brand of swing and big band music is a local favorite. The fireworks are expected to begin at 9:30 p.m. Parking will not be available by the fort in the afternoon so consider pre-registering with a parking garage space before the Fourth.
The music will be a few minutes from the fort at the Plaza de la Constitución. The fireworks will launch at 1 South Castillo Dr., St. Augustine, FL.
Choral Arts Society Presents “Celebrate America!”
Take a few hours out of the day on July 4 to bring the whole family out for some Americana and Patriotic jams. The Choral Arts Society will host a live musical revue. The event is totally free, though donations to the program are welcomed. They will go to directly support college-bound art and music students through scholarships.
The event takes place July 4 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the nearby town of Palm Coast. The show is at 5400 Belle Terre Pkwy., Palm Coast, FL.
St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum
The St. Augustine Lighthouse is currently accepting early registration for their own Fourth of July offer. You can see the booming fireworks over the bay from 164 feet in the air. You can’t find a better view anywhere. Reservations will go very quickly. It is currently $50 a person.
The view is just unprecedented. Avoid the crowds and take to the tower. The lighthouse is located at 81 Lighthouse Ave., St. Augustine, FL, at Red Cox Road.
