Known as the ancient city, St. Augustine Florida is the nation’s oldest city, having been established in 1565. Today, the cobblestone streets, ancient buildings, and beautiful beaches make this town a premier tourist destination, bringing people from all around the world to experience the wonder that is St. Augustine. As a fishing vacation destination, there is no other city that compares to the sheer variety of fish that can be found in this coastal village; everything from bass, crappie trout, and bluegill, to snook, blackdrum, King Mackerel, mahi-mahi and sailfish call the waters off our coast home, making St. Augustine fishing incredibly popular!
Where are the best places to fish?
Quite frankly, the simplest answer is anywhere there is water! St. Augustine fishing locations are spread all over and the best places are determined by the type of fish you are interested in catching! St. Johns River is the place for freshwater fish; as a matter of fact, a well-known bass tournament is held annually just about 20 some miles out of St. Augustine.
For those lazy Saturday afternoons, bridge and pier fishing can be extremely popular. All you need is some bait, a chair and a pole, and a cooler for carrying home your daily take! Fly fishing is not normally considered a Florida fishing sport, but has become the latest trend on Salt Run, just off Anastasia Island.
Our favorite type of fishing, however, is straight from the boat – with or without motors! Kayak and canoe fishing are wonderful ways to enjoy a quiet and noise free day – nothing but the sounds of the water lapping against the kayak and other nature sounds, creating a calm and stress free day! Don’t forget your sunscreen, though; the Florida sun shines brighter above the water! Surf fishing can be a fun but strenuous type of fishing as well. You have to awfully strong arms to be able to cast out far enough beyond the breakers. This is a great way to catch drum and pompano.
Finally, one of the most in demand types of fishing in St. Augustine is off shore fishing in the deep waters off the coast. Amberjack and cobia can be caught closer in, while further out Kingfish and sailfish can be among your day’s haul. St. Augustine fishing charters are perfect for this type of fishing, as the knowledgeable crews know the best spots to cast your line, ensuring delicious fresh meals of local fish for the foreseeable future!
